There was a fly in my camera. It must have crawled in when I changed the film. I opened the camera to get it out. When I looked through the viewfinder it was still there.
Clever place, I remember thinking. I didn't see him again. Not even in the photographs.

In den vreemde is made within the gates of a gated community in Xiamen, China. More and more cities around the world are being separated from public space. When living there I realised that this was not only about safety but also seemed too be about avoiding unexpected experiences. In den vreemde shows this hidden space with a strictly directed walk through this area.

In den vreemde was shown as a slide show an Gallery 1646 in Den Haag, 2006 and in Design Factory in Shanghai in 2005. It is also printed as a small book with the seize 9.2 x 12 cm.
